Leaving Winter  from In this Life©2007
Winter has come in with the wind
Frozen branches out on a limb
Christmas slipped off on a sleigh
Now it’s a new year today
Even the coldest mountain winter
Couldn’t freeze time at all
Your thoughts melt the ice in my mind
When with you I feel life is kind
Dark phantoms left from a curse
With your soft breath they’re dispersed
After the long cold mountain winter
You’ll hear a robin call

This winter’s just fine for snowmen
But me I’m down the line once again
The next drink of shine from this moon
Spring will be priming her tune
Even the coldest mountain winter
Couldn’t freeze time at all
Your smile has the warmth of sunshine
Dancin dresses on a clothesline
What of the ice and the snow?
Water for flowers to grow
After the long cold mountain winter
You’ll hear a robin call

Like a Bird With a Broken Wing  from The Jester©2010
Do you ever feel like you’re part of a puzzle
And yet you’re a puzzle yourself?
There ain’t no deal on hearts by the dozen
Ain’t no spare on the shelf
In my head I can hear, all your parts played so clear
Every song seems to miss you tonight
Even though you hang back, you play clear and direct
It seems wrong you’re not here on my right
There ain’t no way to play some of these songs
If you ain’t here to sing
But I guess we’ll keep tryin, at best we’ll be flyin
Like a bird with a broken wing

Every dream that we catch, is like sand in a net
But the band has the heart of the town
Like the strings that we stretch, ‘cross the body and neck
We’re bound as a part of a sound
There’s a hole where there should be your banjo
We could sure use that ring
But I guess we’ll keep tryin, at best we’ll be flyin
Like a bird with a broken wing

Living Man  from Soul to Soul©2013
Well when I look at you
I don’t see a dying man
Oh no
I see a living man
Lord knows we cannot know
The mysterious master plan
But we can feel our way
And we can keep on living
You might be thinkin you’ve lost your destiny
But you still got time
The work of living and finding harmony
Doesn’t end with dyin
Well when the master spoke
He spoke in poetry
My Lord
Yes this is known to me
I believe the Holy Ghost
Is part of you and me
And the soul
Lives in eternity
You might be thinkin you’ve lost your destiny
But you still got time
The work of living and finding harmony
Doesn’t end with dyin
And when I look at you
I don’t see a dying man
Oh no
I see a living man
The pain and tears in life
Bring grace and growth within
My friend
I pray you keep on living

Lucky Bad Luck from In this Life©2007
One day a dirty rounder went and stole my car
He made his getaway but he didn’t get far
They found my old jalopy down the road a piece
Engine been a dyin and it done deceased
But even if it had not of been for that
The gas gage was empty and the tire was flat
I pushed it down the road but it wasn’t too hard
Cause they’d left it half a block from the old junk yard

Hard luck, hits me and I grumble and curse
But then I have to admit, it could have been worse
Seems like I’m just stuck, with lucky bad luck

Many years ago I had a dear fiancé
Till one of my good time buddies went and stole her away
Now they send me Christmas cards with pictures to boot
I throw them in the fire with the ashes and soot
I go down to a swimmin hole to swim like a champ
But when I reach the deep end I come down with a cramp
A little kid jumps in and sure enough saves my life
To my surprise he has the eyes of my would be wife
Hard luck…
I had no occupation so I went for a job
While filling the application I was beat up and robbed
Went to the police station for the charges to press
But when I said my name they said “you’re under arrest”
A dozen parking tickets was in need of my pay
I sold my only guitar to a chump who don’t play
Went to file for bankruptcy my brain on the brink
And there you smiled a filing and you gave me a wink
Hard luck…

Meditations on Mom  from Soul to Soul©2013
The first smile I ever saw
Was a smile that held life’s sweetness
The promise of a poem
The kind of smile that holds your heart
And says you’re not alone
That smile has been a gift to me
As long as I’ve been around
It’s still the sweetest smile
I’ve ever found

The first eyes that looked in mine
Had a depth that can’t be measured
A heart that shines in teardrops
Eyes that look into troubled souls
With love that lets the fear stop for a while
Those eyes have seen the best in me
As long as I’ve been around
Their still the gentlest eyes
I’ve ever found

The first song I ever heard
Was a lullaby with blue notes
Soothing as a gentle wind
Even if the memory fades
The melody will never end
That song has been like a seed in my soul
May it ever grow
It’s still the sweetest song
I’ll ever know

Moonflower  from Soul to Soul©2013
Moonflower
You shine your beauty in the darkness
You bring hope into the hardest time of night
All my memories
Are in the sunshine
The miracles
And the sunshine
Little birds hovering around my flower seeds
I just can’t believe some of the mysteries
Living and giving
What we’re here for
All these little miracles
Like the moonflower

Mud’s Blues  from Jay Brown©1996
Gonna tell you people ‘bout a man named Mud
Mud, Mud, movin slow
Gonna tell you people ‘bout a man named Mud
Mud, Mud, movin slow
Gonna tell you people ‘bout a man named Mud
Born in the Missisippi delta flood
Mud Mud Movin slow
You got to travel on the muddy road

Now Mud was lazy and Mud was slow
Mud, Mud, movin’ slow
Yeah Mud was lazy and Mud was slow
Mud, Mud, movin’ slow
Mud was lazy and Mud was slow
But he always got to where he had to go
Mud, Mud movin slow
You got to travel on the muddy road

Well some say Mud was a Hoodoo man
Mud, Mud movin slow
Well some say Mud was a Hoodoo man
Mud, Mud movin slow
Some say Mud was a Hoodoo man
Made folks dizzy when he shook their hands
Mud, Mud movin slow
You got to travel on the muddy road

And some say Mud was a back door chile’
Mud, Mud movin slow
Yeah some say Mud was a back door chile’
Mud, Mud movin slow
Some say Mud was a back door chile’
He was always sleepy and he always smiled
Mud, Mud movin slow
You got to travel on the muddy road

Well I knew Mud to be a rambling man
Mud, Mud movin slow
Yeah I knew Mud to be a rambling man
Mud, Mud movin slow
I knew Mud to be a rambling man
Tryin to find women that could raise some sand
Mud, Mud, movin slow
You got to travel on the muddy road

My Best Friend  from In this Life©2007
Been left alone, like a bone buried in the back yard
In a quiet room where echoes hang around
Like slammin doors, the screechin of the tires
And words that should have never made a sound
Oh the chains of love can clang and rang like church chimes
You love ‘em till you’re left with them alone
I’m happy she’s been shown love for the first time
I just wish that it’d been me who’d got her shown
But no other love could ever hold a candle
To the light that shines between the best of friends
To lose them both is twice as hard to handle
And she ran off, with my best friend, again

Well she loves him so, and I could never fault her
For a finer hound dog no one ever did see
And he loved her the first time that he saw her
When he licked her more than he’d ever licked me
I know it’s not romance that holds their hearts together
They’ve got no games to play no test to fail
Still they come home late nights dancing in the weather
And he looks like he’s got a tail, to tell
But no other love could ever hold a candle
To the light that shines between the best of friends
All your friends in life, they’re all some kind of animal
And he ran off, with my best friend, again

Nothing I could say, could find a way between them
So I’ll try to be a man, and wish ‘em well
All my human words would fail to match the meaning
She finds each time that old dog wags his tail
And it’s a lonely night, with an empty bed to lay on
And an empty bowl a lyin on the floor
I know that girls and dogs, can always find their way home
But they just don’t feel at home here, anymore
But no other love could ever hold a candle
To the light that shines between the best of friends
To lose them both is twice as hard to handle
And she ran off, with my best friend, again

My Roof Caved In  from Protest Songs etc. ©2004
I was lyin in my bed one night
Tired as I could be
My roof caved in, and ain’t it chagrin
It fell on poor old me
I rolled out of bed, pullin splinters out my head
Put on my old house shoes
Had them mean old low down disgusted
My roof done busted blues
Bout that time a rain started comin
Wasn’t holdin one drop back
Then come the snow, and brother don’t you know
I wish I had my old roof back
I sat on my bed, wishin I was Ted
And looked around my old bedroom
It looked so nice, so clean and white
I threw out my old vacuum
Now I’m so glad
That my roof caved in
The big old sky
Is my long lost friend
I’m so happy, just reelin
Ever since I lost my ceiling
I’m so glad my roof, caved in

The very next mornin, without warnin
The sun began to shine
It climbed up my walls, and walked down my halls
Seein what it could find
And up in the sky birds began to fly
Droppin by for conversation
I said you see, my roof left me
They said congratulations!
About that time a breeze started blowin
Gentle as a doggies tale
Before I knew, what it would do
It blew in the morning mail
Now I never guessed
That I’d get blessed
With such catastrophe
But ever since
My roof caved in
Daylight’s dawned on me
Now I’m so glad
That my roof caved in
The big old sky
Is my long lost friend
I’m so happy, just reelin
Ever since I lost my ceiling
I’m so glad my roof, caved in

Nash Vegas Blues  from Protest Songs etc. ©2004
Well look at all these cowboy thieves
Dressed like Vegas stars
Shootin off their fireworks
Smashin their guitars
They made it to the rodeo
And they never learned to ride
They made it to the radio
They hardly even tried
It isn’t hard to be a star
And make your money fast
You can sell your snake oil songs
But they won’t ever last
And when the spotlights shifted and
Your fame all fades away
Your just another broken down
On that lost highway
Mr. Williams
I wish you could come by here again
Mr. Williams
We could surely use your kind again
You made every song you sang
Out of solid rock
And you never stopped
To let ‘em dog you round

You formulate your big buck bait
Give it words that rhyme
You stick it in some cowboy shoes and
You ship it down the line
When all your empty handed fans
They don’t ask for much
Just a song that makes ‘em smile
With something they can touch
Mr. Williams
I wish you could come by here again
Mr. Williams
We could surely use your kind again
You made every song you sang
Out of solid rock
And you never stopped
To let ‘em dog you round

Not Made of Stone from Can't Help but Wonder ©2016
Precious people in my life
I donít want to see a world
Without you
I found out that my home
Is a feeliní
Than I get any time when Iím with you

Every day is a gift and a thief
Every loss is also a relief
Every dream that Iíve ever achieved
Has left me with one less dream

I know weíre not made of stone
Winds of time have no trouble
Sweeping through
And everything Iíll ever hold
Will be healing me
While itís breaking this true heart in two

I know weíre not made of stone
But I donít want to see a world
Without you
I found out that my home
Is a feeliní
That I get anywhere when Iím with you

Oldest Love Will Make You New from Protest Songs etc. ©2004
In my final time of sorrow
Just before the flowers bloom
There’s a better day tomorrow
Oldest love will make you new
When we follow in the footsteps
Of the ones that walked so true
We will walk the path of freedom
In the holy light around us
There is nothing we can’t see
Oh the beauty that abounds us
Oldest love will make you free
Oldest love will make you new
Oldest love, oldest love
Oldest love, forever bringing youth
As the ages take their toll
It will cleanse the sinsick soul
Oldest love is timeless as the truth

Though our night be spent in mourning
There is nothing we need fear
Old sun lights up new mornings
Oldest love is always near
In the holy light around us
There is nothing we can’t see
Oh the beauty that abounds us
Oldest love will make you free
Oldest love will make you new
Oldest love, oldest love
Oldest love, forever bringing youth
As the ages take their toll
It will cleanse the sinsick soul
Oldest love is timeless as the truth

The Old Man in the Moon  from Can't Help but Wonder ©2016
Iíve seen a billion buildings
All tryiní to scrape the sky
I have to hold my laugh in
To think they think theyíre high
And Iíve seen nations who revered me
But they all ended way too soon
I see everything so clearly
For Iím the old man in the moon

And Iíve heard all of your love songs
And thereís three or four I dig
All the ones that sing about me
I guess I made it big
Ah but if you saw what Iíve seen
Youíd sing a different tune
No one knows just what the night brings
Like the old man in the moon

And Iíve been through every window
And I never make a sound
And I guess no one ever will know
The times I been around
And youíve caught me in your gravity
But Iím hip to all your doiní
A tawdry tragic comedy
For the old man in the moon

One Windy Day  from Protest Songs etc. ©2004
A boy and a dog
And a little green ball
Were playin one day on the beach
They were havin great fun
Runnin under the sun
Laughin and barkin in the sand
Till along came a breeze
Blew the ball out to sea
Too far for the boy and dog to reach
And the undertow was strong
So it wasn’t too long
The little ball was miles away from land

Well the little green ball seemed exceedingly small
If you saw it floating on the mighty sea
To the seagulls it seemed
Just a little speck of green
The fishes thought it was a bobber
But to one boy and girl
It seemed big as the world
The two little castaway fleas
Two lovebugs in June
On a fleas honeymoon
Lyin out by the pool of dog slobber

Well the little green ball floated on and on
And the fleas multiplied and prospered
Flocks of fleas of every color
Every class and every creed
Living in peaceful harmony
Days and nights drizzled down
As they floated around
Riding on waves and crosscurrents
And they never did fight
Or act out of spite
None of them would even harm a flea

Till there came the dark hour
When the weather turned sour
And many a flea lost his life at sea
That was when there appeared
The dark shadow of fear
And the fleas began pleas for security
But on how to provide it
The fleas were divided
Flea unity flew out the window
And though the weather had cleared
They still lived in fear
For uncertainty grows like the wind blows

Flealigion appeared
To fight off the fear
And the fleas began praying to Dog
Each Flealigion claimed
To know Dog’s name
And each one hated the other
Some fleas got mad
And had a jihad
For the glory of their Dog Chuallah
Other fleas got saved
And waged a crusade
For the glory of their Dog Jerover
Flea countries emerged with their flea flags flyin
Fighting for their place in the sun
The Chi-fleas fought the So-fleates
The Redcoats fought the Blues
The Euro-fleans fought The Aflea-kans
The Flea-rabs fought the Flews
The United Fleas fought in Fleat-nam
Nobody knows who won
The Flea Flux Flan fought in Birmingham
And they all fought eachother ‘fore it was all said and done.

But the country that won
The place in the sun
Was the one called United Fleas
Once they fought to the top
They wanted to stop
Prosperity made ‘em feel peaceful
So the few in command
They drew up a plan
The project for a new flea century
Just crush any threat
And you cover your bet
Call it the axis of Fleavil

Well no one ever saw
That little green ball
Since that one windy day on the beach
Didn’t bother the boy
He had other toys
And the dog never once missed the fleas
But it still floats along
Like some lonesome old song
With never a soul within ear’s reach
Just a planet of fleas
A drift on the sea
In the middle of ball war 3

One Day You’re Gonna Be Free  from Jay Brown©1996
You’re no longer a child but you still need to grow
For to like what you like and to know what you know
The breath that you’re breathin gets lost in the wind
But the gifts of your grievin will come back again
Like flashes of lightning on shadows and bends
And sometimes a beautiful woman
Ain’t nothing but a beautiful shell
And some people hide
From the goodness inside
And some people can’t even tell
Well you’ve got a hard way of lookin
At something so easy to see
But eyes of your kind will never go blind
And one day your gonna be free
Well you cling to the cradle, and you hide from the grave
You get lost in the time that your tryin to save
Wherever your walkin you’re one step behind
The girl that you follow in the back of your mind
Who’s keepin your sorrow from robbin you blind
And sometimes a beautiful woman
Ain’t nothing but a beautiful shell
And some people hide
From the goodness inside
And some people can’t even tell
Well you’ve got a hard way of lookin
At something so easy to see
But eyes of your kind will never go blind
And one day your gonna be free
